The Drug Supply Chain Security Act is a law that was implemented in 2013 by the FDA. It outlines critical steps to build an electronic, interoperable system to identify and trace certain prescription drugs as they are distributed in the United States. By 2023, the system will electronically exchange drug information at the individual package level providing end to end visibility across the supply chain.
Needless to say, this is a complex law that has brought momentous change to the way most pharmacies track and trace their products. Requirements have rolled out gradually over a 10-year time span, all leading up to full interoperability in 2023.
